Counseling 101: What Happens During a Session?
One in five American adults has a mental health condition. Research has shown that these mental health conditions can be treated effectively. Scientists continue to disprove the stigmas surrounding mental health. As a result, more people have acknowledged the value of modern therapy. But many people have no prior experience with counseling. This leaves them wondering what to expect from counseling.
Making the decision to attend counseling is a positive step and offers support beyond that which is available from family or friends. It offers an environment in which you can express your feelings and gain deeper insight into your difficulties. Because counseling sessions are confidential, you can talk about things you might not feel comfortable discussing with anyone else.
Individual counseling is a one-on-one discussion between the counselor and the client. The two form a therapeutic relationship that promotes trust and personal growth. Individual counseling focuses on the client’s immediate or near future concerns. Counseling allows individuals to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviors, work through challenging or difficult memories, and identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change. Many clients report gaining a better understanding of themselves and others. Counseling can also help you set personal goals and work toward desired change. During the initial session, the counselor will explain the counseling process which assists the client in knowing what to expect from counseling sessions. The two will collaborate to develop a plan which helps to guide the treatment process.
